At only 5 km from Castro Marina and Santa Cesarea Terme and 15 km(8-10 minutes) from Otranto, Vaste draws every manner of tourist from those attracted by the sea and the characteristic Mediterranean climate to those fascinated by archaeology and local folkways.
In this small village there are traces of the Messapian people who were the first inhabitants of the Salentina peninsula as well as an interesting museum, a fascinating Byzantine crypt and ancient rock engravings.

Vaste is today a small village, a hamlet of Poggiardo. It rises on the ancient site of Bausta remembered by Plinio and Tolomeo.

Santi Stefani Crypt (10th century), the plural reference to St. Stephen in the name of the crypt derives from the three paintings of the saint on the internal walls. Carved out of the tuff, the façade has three arched entrances. The interior has a basilica layout with three naves, each with an apse, separated by square pillars.

It is one of the Byzantine crypt more important all the Salento for the cycle of frescoes which adorn the interior, attributable to different phases of the church’s history (10th -14th century).

Not far there are the ruins of the Paleo-Christian Church (5th century AD), around it an extensive Paleo- Christian Necropolis carved out of the rock distributed over the outcrops of rock which surround it, with hundreds of  tombs.
The “Baronial Palace”, situated in the centre of the village, was built on the side of medieval castle. It is made up of two main buildings, the tower and the palace. It is the site of the Archaeological Museum of the Messapian Civilization (IV –III c. B.C.)

Near the archaeological area there is the big “serra” of Poggiardo village, here the visitor will admire the Read Seas Pinewood where the pine and the olive join in Mediterranean wedding.

Here many types of endemic wild orchids can be appreciated. The name of the pinewood it originates from the colour of the round of the close old bauxite quarries. Here find  the complex of the Poggiardo’s carsick caves unfortunately, these underground sites are inaccessible to the majority of visitors, being reserved only to equipped speleologists. For this important environmental, anthropological, archaeological and historical territorial rich, the serra of Poggiardo has grown the archaeological - environmental park.
